WHY MANCITY THIS SEASON

Manchester City continued their unerring march to a third Premier League title on Sunday with a potentially season-defining victory at Old Trafford.

Goals from David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi helped Pep Guardiola’s side see off the challenge of nearest title rivals Manchester United to extend their lead at the top of the table to a daunting 11 points.

The victory was City’s 14th straight win, breaking the Premier League record, previously held by Arsenal, for the longest winning streak in a single season.
With the Manchester City juggernaut showing no sign of slowing down, what other Premier League records could they surpass if they carry on at this pace?
Winning points margin

No team in Premier League history has ever made as strong a start to a season as Pep Guardiola’s current crop.

Manchester City have picked up a total of 46 points from a possible 48. Their one failure to pick up all three points came all the way back in August in a 1-1 draw with Everton at the Etihad.

City are 1/25 to win the Premier League with some bookmakers and considering they have already beaten Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United once this season, it’s feasible Guardiola’s side could go on to win the title by a record margin.

Man City’s extraordinary lead over their title rivals is best illustrated by the fact that sixth-place Spurs, who came second last season, are mathematically closer to the bottom of the table than to the league leaders.

If they do want to go and set a new points-margin record, they will need to overtake Sir Alex Ferguson’s treble-winning Manchester United team, who won the 1999/2000 Premier League title by a massive 18 points.

Currently averaging 2.88 points per game, Manchester City will end up winning the Premier League by a mammoth 26 points.

Projected margin: 1st Man City (109 pts) 2nd Man Utd (83 pts)

Verdict: On target to smash it.
Most goals in a season

With a frontline boasting the likes of Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus it’s come as no surprise that Man City have made such short work of unpicking Premier League defences.

City have already racked up 48 goals in 16 games this season, 12 more than their nearest rivals Manchester United and as many as Chelsea and Everton have managed combined.

Despite their scintillating start, Pep Guardiola’s current crop are actually two goals shy of the club’s best ever goalscoring start to a Premier League season.

At the start of the 2012/13 season Roberto Mancini’s defending champions managed to bring up a half-century in the first half of the season.

Worryingly for Pep Guardiola, the Italian manager was sacked in May, less than a year after leading Man City to their maiden Premier League title.

The all-time Premier League record for goals scored in a single season is held by Chelsea’s title-winning team from the 2009/10 season.
Most wins in a single season

Pep Guardiola’s side have already claimed the record for the most Premier League wins after 16 games of the season, with Sunday’s 2-1 win over Man Utd their 15th victory.

If Man City are to break the record for the most number of wins in a single Premier League season they will need to surpass the mark set by Antonio Conte’s Chelsea last season. The Italian won the title in his debut season in England, romping to Chelsea’s second Premier League title in three years with a 13-match winning run that saw them amass 30 victories in total.

City’s derby win over Manchester United also equalled Arsenal’s record of 14 straight victories played across games spanning two seasons.

Guardiola’s side currently have an astounding win rate of 93.75 per cent in Premier League matches.

If we assume they can maintain this phenomenal success rate, Man City will end the 2017/18 season as champions having failed to win just TWO of their 38 Premier League games.

Projected number of wins: 35.75

Verdict: On course to set a ridiculous record.
